Raccoon in a tree

September 25th, 2008 Posted in 2009 Calendar Photo Contest, Best contest photos

This was shot in my backyard, this is a mother raccoon that just had babies and was out searching for food in the daytime which is highly unusual for raccoons.

It is not at all unusual for a mother coonie to be out and about in daylight if she has young ones. Coonies are not nocturnal until they are nearly a year old and for the early weeks, mother is up feeding every three hours like clockwork. Not seeing raccoons during the day is an old wive’s tale. They are just very good at hiding most of the time.

It would be important to identify the habitat. This has been my recurrent comment, i.e. that photos should somehow reflect their sense of place. How did someone from Wisconsin happen upon this website. Maybe it’s a picture taken in WS?
As Karen remarks, animal pictures are cool. I’d like to see at least one pic set in The Bronx Zoo please.
