Split Rock

The name “Split Rock” is ubiquitous in the northeast Bronx, but it is not easy to locate the actual rock itself. The giant glacial boulder hides in plain site on the edge of Pelham Bay Park within mere feet of the northbound lanes of the New England Thruway. Split Rock is a formidable reminder the glacial forces that shaped the Bronx and it is closely associated with the legacy of Anne Hutchinson who was massacred with her family in 1643 at her nearby settlement during the struggles between the native Siwanoy tribe and the original Dutch settlers.
