The Bronx Council for Environmental Quality is proud to have

THREE members of its Board of Directors named to the Bronx Power 50.

This special issue of City and State Magazine issue recognizes “50 of the borough’s most influential leaders” who “have who made a mark on politics, media, commerce, activism, social work, and more.” BCEQ Secretary Karen Argenti and Board members Mychal Johnson, and Nilka Martell will be honored at a Bronx Power 50 reception and networking event on Wednesday September 26, at Wave Hill.

BECQ’s three honorees have made their mark on the Bronx, fighting tirelessly for their communities and sound environmental policies and justice.  As former chair of Bronx Community Board 7 and founder and board member of the Fort Independence Park Neighborhood Association, the Friends of Jerome Park Reservoir and the Jerome Park Conservancy, Argenti was instrumental in the fight against the Croton Water Treatment Plant.  Johnson co-founded South Bronx Unite, and is member of the Mott Haven/Port Morris Community Land Stewards, the New York City Community Land Initiative, and serves on the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation’s Watershed Advisory Committee of the Harlem River Watershed and Natural Resources Management Plan (along with Argenti). Nilka Martell founded Loving the Bronx to share the borough’s history, culture, architecture and character through tours, photos and articles, serves on the Bronx River Alliance Board of Directors and has been named one of 25 influential Bronx women by the Bronx Times, and is beloved in her community as the “Mayor of Parkchester.”

Together, Argenti, Johnson, and Martell have helped to make BCEQ an indispensable voice of environmental advocacy in the borough.  BCEQ brings together people with a commitment to their community’s well-being and to their borough’s sustainable development. For more than 47 years, our members share a mission—“a sound, forward-looking environmental policy regarding an aesthetic, unpolluted, environment”— as the Bronx booms and grows.

The Bronx Power 50 recognizes many individuals who are making a difference in the borough.  But no other organization has as many individuals recognized as the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality.  As noted by Robert Fanuzzi, newly elected President of BCEQ, “this rare accomplishment is a sign of the impact and recognition for the power of environmental advocacy in the Bronx.”

Who says environmentalists don’t stand a chance?  In the Bronx, they count!
