Question of the Week: How have you prepared for emergencies?

(Washington, D.C. – September 8, 2008) Ever wanted to tell EPA what you thought on an environmental topic?  Each week, you have your chance in the EPA blog, Greenversations.  Each question is an open-ended blog entry; please share your thoughts as comments.

This week’s question:

How have you prepared for emergencies?
Hurricanes, spring floods, and other incidents can all wreak havoc with our daily lives. Here at EPA, we’re ready to respond in an official way. For individual people, preparing can range from keeping extra food and water to making evacuation plans. Either way, it pays to think ahead. In fact, September is National Preparedness Month.

I am completely unprepared. Our summer home is on a barrier island. The last time there was an evacuation order, my wife stayed and later said, “See it wasn’t so bad”. One problem is that the media overhype the weather, kinda’ like The Boy Who Cried Wolfe.

Well, I keep a go bag with important data and files (like a backup of my computer) and other papers. I have some bottled water and blankets in the car. I worry about my cat and whether or not I will be able to get him into the cat box in time — but I have a plan to just throw him in the car. And finally, I keep some small change so if the ATMs are down, I can still manage.
